Wireless Security

The wireless network itself has no data security features. Anything you send across the wireless network may be visible to others, especially other wireless users in the general area. This could include passwords and credit card numbers.

Since data transmitted across the wireless network may be visible, the only way to protect it is to be sure it's transmitted in an encrypted form.

Here are some ways to accomplish this:

  • Use "secure connections" on the Web

When visiting websites that need to be encrypted (email, online banking, etc) make sure that they offer a "secure connection" and use it. A secure connection will encrypt all your communication. Check for a glowing or locked "padlock" icon on your web browser indicating a secure connection.

The WebMail site at webmail.utk.edu uses secure connection and is a safe way to access your email.

  • Use VPN

A more complete solution is offered by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) client while connected to wireless. VPN creates an encrypted tunnel through which you transmit data. Using a VPN connection, all of your traffic over wireless will be encrypted.

For detailed information on these issues, including a link by which you may download a VPN client, see wireless.utk.edu/security.
